VAR on site

 

VAR processes between 900,000 and 1,000,000 tons of waste yearly. Underneath a list of the different activities can be found. The recycling- and processing activities are carried out by divisions of VAR. These are:

  • VAR Biogeen, composting;
  • VAR Biogeen, biomass;
  • VAR Sorteren, sorting of industrial waste and building and demolition waste;
  • VAR Mineralen, recycling of building and demolition waste;
  • VAR Mineralen, dumping of residue streams and cleaning of old landfill sites;
  • VAR Mineralen, washing and recycling of contaminated soil;
  • VAR Energie, production of secondary fuels.

 

VAR Engineering is the development and engineering department of VAR and is responsible for the design and building of all installations and techniques applied by VAR.

 

Composting

Division:                

VAR Biogeen

Activity:                

Processing of organic waste streams into high-quality compost

Capacity:               

180.000 tons per year

Type of waste:       

85% organic fraction from household waste (obtained from separate collection) / 15% biowaste

In operation since, In 1989 VAR Biogeen started with composting. In 1993 the existing composting installation was built. 

End products:        

Production of compost: 80.000 tons per year. This compost is registered under the quality control marks “Keurcompost”, RAG and RHP. The compost is mainly sold in the highest market area; the soil industry. 

Details:

The installation works according to the patented VAR-composting system and is provided with an advanced system for air treatment and smell abatement. The installation is developed and built by VAR Engineering.

Since 2006 this system is validated in accordance with the animal by- products regulation.

Production of biomass

Division:                

VAR Biogeen

Activity:

The production of biomass for power stations from residues from composting and sorted waste timber. 

Capacity:

60.000 tons per year

Type of waste:

30% rest timber from the composting and 70% sorting timber.

In operation since, In 1999 VAR Biogeen started with the production of biomass. 

End products:

A homogeneous end product which is applied in standard power stations and biomass power stations.

Seperating and sorting of industrial waste and building and demolition waste

Division:                

VAR Sorteren

Capacity:               

160.000 tons per year

Type of waste:       

This division processes a mixture of industrial waste and building and demolition waste. This exists of paper, plastics, plaster,sand, rubble, timber, metals, etc.

In operation since, 1994

End products:          

Selected mono-streams such as timber, rubble, metals, sand, PVC and a high-calorific stream, existing of a mixture of paper and plastics. The HC-stream is processed further by VAR Energie to secondary fuels.

Details:                  

The separating and sorting process is automated for the greater part. A part of the timber-stream is separated by means of the NIR-technology. The installation is designed and built by VAR Engineering.

Breaking and recycling of rubble

Division:                

VAR Mineralen, rubble-recycling

Capacity:               

300.000 tons per year

Type of waste:       

Concrete and brick-rubble, obtained through separated collection

In operation since  1982

End products:         

Certified rubble-granulates which are used as foundation materials in the Road-constructions and as raw-material for concrete

In 2002 the old rubble-crusher is replaced by a new installation

Washing and recycling of soil and sand

Division:                

VAR Mineralen, soil-cleaning

Capacity:               

120.000 tons per year

Type of waste:       

Sludge from sewage and sand from landfill-clearing

In operation since  1999

End products:        

Cleaned sand that is used as foundation materials in the road-construction and as raw-material for concrete

This is the first installation in The Netherlands that processes soil from landfill-clearing into high-quality sand. 

Dumping of residues and cleaning of landfills

Division:                

VAR Mineralen, dumping

Capacity:              

200.000 tons per year

Type of waste:       

Waste streams which cannot be processed in a different way (contaminated soil, asbestos, sludge, etc.) A former council landfill, without ground protecting provisions, are cleaned by VAR Mineralen, dumping. Over 50% is recycled, the rest isdumped.

In operation since 1992

End products:         

The contaminated soil of the former landfill goes to the sand washer. Also the landfill produces biogas that is turned into electricity on the spot (approx. 700 kWh).

This is the first time that in the Netherlands a former landfill is dug up completely and selected. 

Production secondary fuels

Certified secondary fuels 

Details:                 

Biggest producer of secondary fuels in The Netherlands. Installations are fully renewed in 2005 and 2006 with the help of VAR Engineering. In 2007 a new installation will be added.

13        Design of a composting installation, Osnabrück, Germany

VAR has built a composting plant for treatment of the small, pre-separated fraction of mixed domestic waste. The installation processes approximately 35.000 tons of waste per year. VAR Engineering has made a new design for the reconstruction and expansion of the installation.

12        Building of an aeration system for tereatment of digistate from a Kompogas-plant for biowaste, ROVA Zwolle, The Netherlands

VAR Engineering has realised an aeration system for the digistate from a Kompagas digestion plant. In this system, separate collected biowaste is digested. VAR has built this system as a sub-supplier from Axpo-Kompogas.

11        Engineering and project management composting plant Bangladesh

VAR Engineering has helped with the design and project management of a composting plant in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This installation treats about 35.000 tons of market waste a year. The client was a joint venture between the Dutch company WWR and the Bangladesh company Waste Concern. VAR Engineering has also carried out a training program for the staff of the installation. The training was both in Bangladesh as in The Netherlands.

10        Design of a landfill cleaning installation, Afvalzorg, The Netherlands

VAR Engineering has designed a separating installation for Afvalzorg, which is suitable for the separation of waste, that gets cleared at the cleaning of a landfill.

9          Design and building of a composting installation, Sede France, Tarascon

This installation is designed for treatment of sludge from water-treatment works. The installation processes approximately 40.000 tons of waste per year. VAR Engineering is responsible for the turn-key delivery of the aeration installation. VAR Engineering has just received the order for this delivery. The project is delivered in April 2005.

8          Design and building of a pellet-installation, Russia

In cooperation with Royal Haskoning, VAR Engineering realized a pellet installation in Yekatherinaburg. It involved a full renovation and construction of a second-hand pellet-installation.

7          Design and building of a composting installation, BEP Namur, Belgium

This installation is designed for the treatment of biowaste. The installation processes approximately 30.000 tons of waste per year. VAR Engineering has designed the construction of the installation and was responsible for the turn-key delivery of the composting-technology, including air-treatment and bio-filter. Aim of the project was to solve the smell-problem of the installation and to improve the compost-quality. These objectives have been amply met.

6          Design and building of a composting installation, Sede Benelux, Belgium

This installation is designed for treatment of biowaste, mixed with organic sludge. The installation processes approximately 50.000 tons of waste per year. VAR Engineering has designed the construction of the installation and was responsible for the turn-key delivery of the composting-technology, including air-treatment and bio-filter.

5          Design and building of a composting-installation, Galway, Ireland

This installation is designed for treatment of the organic fraction from domestic waste, mixed with a small amount of biowaste (structure material). The processing capacity is 5.000 tons per year. VAR Engineering has made a design for the construction of the installation and was responsible for the turn-key delivery of the composting technology, including air treatment and biofilter. This installation is built in an industrial area at 50 m. distance of a residential area.

4          Design and building of a sorting machine

This project concerned the design and the building of a sorting-machine for the biggest waste processing company in The Netherlands, AVR, in Rotterdam. VAR Engineering has carried out the work completely turn-key.

This installation is designed for treatment of the organic fraction from domestic waste, mixed with a small amount of biowaste. The project was an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
