





VAR processes between 900,000 and 1,000,000 tons of waste yearly. Underneath a list of the different activities can be found. The recycling- and processing activities are carried out by divisions of VAR. These are:
VAR Engineering is the development and engineering department of VAR and is responsible for the design and building of all installations and techniques applied by VAR.
VAR Biogeen
Processing of organic waste streams into high-quality compost
180.000 tons per year
85% organic fraction from household waste (obtained from separate collection) / 15% biowaste
In operation since, In 1989 VAR Biogeen started with composting. In 1993 the existing composting installation was built.
Production of compost: 80.000 tons per year. This compost is registered under the quality control marks “Keurcompost”, RAG and RHP. The compost is mainly sold in the highest market area; the soil industry.
The installation works according to the patented VAR-composting system and is provided with an advanced system for air treatment and smell abatement. The installation is developed and built by VAR Engineering.
Since 2006 this system is validated in accordance with the animal by- products regulation.
VAR Biogeen
The production of biomass for power stations from residues from composting and sorted waste timber.
60.000 tons per year
30% rest timber from the composting and 70% sorting timber.
In operation since, In 1999 VAR Biogeen started with the production of biomass.
A homogeneous end product which is applied in standard power stations and biomass power stations.
VAR Sorteren
160.000 tons per year
This division processes a mixture of industrial waste and building and demolition waste. This exists of paper, plastics, plaster,sand, rubble, timber, metals, etc.
In operation since, 1994
Selected mono-streams such as timber, rubble, metals, sand, PVC and a high-calorific stream, existing of a mixture of paper and plastics. The HC-stream is processed further by VAR Energie to secondary fuels.
Details:
The separating and sorting process is automated for the greater part. A part of the timber-stream is separated by means of the NIR-technology. The installation is designed and built by VAR Engineering.
VAR Mineralen, rubble-recycling
300.000 tons per year
Concrete and brick-rubble, obtained through separated collection
In operation since 1982
Certified rubble-granulates which are used as foundation materials in the Road-constructions and as raw-material for concrete
In 2002 the old rubble-crusher is replaced by a new installation
VAR Mineralen, soil-cleaning

Sludge from sewage and sand from landfill-clearing

Cleaned sand that is used as foundation materials in the road-construction and as raw-material for concrete
This is the first installation in The Netherlands that processes soil from landfill-clearing into high-quality sand.
VAR Mineralen, dumping
200.000 tons per year
Waste streams which cannot be processed in a different way (contaminated soil, asbestos, sludge, etc.) A former council landfill, without ground protecting provisions, are cleaned by VAR Mineralen, dumping. Over 50% is recycled, the rest isdumped.
In operation since 1992
The contaminated soil of the former landfill goes to the sand washer. Also the landfill produces biogas that is turned into electricity on the spot (approx. 700 kWh).
This is the first time that in the Netherlands a former landfill is dug up completely and selected.

Certified secondary fuels
Biggest producer of secondary fuels in The Netherlands. Installations are fully renewed in 2005 and 2006 with the help of VAR Engineering. In 2007 a new installation will be added.
These are projects that VAR Engineering has carried out for third parties.
VAR has built a composting plant for treatment of the small, pre-separated fraction of mixed domestic waste. The installation processes approximately 35.000 tons of waste per year. VAR Engineering has made a new design for the reconstruction and expansion of the installation.

VAR Engineering has realised an aeration system for the digistate from a Kompagas digestion plant. In this system, separate collected biowaste is digested. VAR has built this system as a sub-supplier from Axpo-Kompogas.

VAR Engineering has helped with the design and project management of a composting plant in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This installation treats about 35.000 tons of market waste a year. The client was a joint venture between the Dutch company WWR and the Bangladesh company Waste Concern. VAR Engineering has also carried out a training program for the staff of the installation. The training was both in Bangladesh as in The Netherlands.
